Guten abend mitenand
This is a phrase often used here in Switzerland, it means Good evening everybody. When I first heard it, it sounded to me like Guten abend Mitterand (the former French president). And I thought, why is the former French president greeted in person? Guess I'm not the smartest person in the world, huh...? :)

Oh that’s nothing. You wanna talk stupid, check this out:
For about the first month I was over here in Germany whenever somebody would say “tschüβ” I thought they were saying “cheers”. I couldn’t figure out why so many people were saying “cheers” to me. I figured maybe they thought I was English; either that or “cheers” might have been some sort of acceptable slang – kinda like people saying “ciao” over in the states.
Nope … the truth of the matter was that I was just ignorant. Nothing new there… ;-)
